Two girls view a river, a horse, a heron, and a lighthouse, inside a glass sphere
Riverland, by Fran Wilde

Still in a road trip/vacation/desert retreat, so here's a very quick review: This book is destined to become the favorite book of a lot of young people, I think. The way Wilde weaves fantasy and reality in order to address really difficult issues of domestic violence and abuse, dreams and nightmares, is important and valuable and beautiful. I listened to this on audiobook, and the voice actor is great.
