When We Were Birds, by Ayanna Lloyd Banwo

What a gorgeous book! When We Were Birds is full of beautiful prose and haunting (literally) characters, which is only enhanced on audio by the stellar perfomances of both readers (one for Yejide's voice and one for Darwin's). The romance is lightly written, realistic, and touching; the coming-of-age arcs for both main characters are strong, thoughtful, and human. And the magic is, well, magical: subtle, unexpected, boundless. This story feels strongly grounded in a specific place, with characters so vivid and alive I feel like I know them. Even the dead ones!
