An Immense World, by Ed Yong

An Immense World is an essential, must-read text that illuminates the natural world in a way I've never experienced. It has heart, it has facts. Every chapter taught me something new--like, almost every single page taught me something new. I'm not exaggerating when I say reading this book will probably make you a better person, because it will expand your ability to imagine yourself in the place of creatures as varied as songbird and shrimp, dogs and octpuses. And your imaginings will be based on reality!

As a writer, I would also encourage every writer to read this book. Understanding the senses is the key to gorgeous prose even if you're a writer of memoir, and if you're a writer of speculative fiction who might, at some point, need to create an alien, this will be literally the most useful, the most fundamental handbook in your arsenal. It is comprehensive and empowering and to date my favorite thing to come out of the covid pandemic.
